Australia’s major solo meetings at Gillman Speedway this weekend
Gillman Media 5 January 2026
Adelaide’s Gillman Speedway hosts the two biggest events on the Australian Motorcycle Speedway calendar this weekend with the final of the Australian Solo Championship on Friday night (9 January) and the FIM Oceania Solo Championship on Sunday night (11 January) at the ‘Ray White Gawler’ Stadium on Wilkins Road, Gillman.
Both events are sponsored by long-time Australian Championship sponsor CBS Bins, and both events will decide Australia’s riders for the 2026 Speedway Grand Prix qualifying rounds in Europe.
The Australian Championship series started in Albury-Wodonga at the weekend and continues in Mildura on Wednesday before the final at Gillman on Friday. After two rounds SGP rider Jack Holder is leading the series with 36 points, just 2 points ahead of Mildura rider, and former World Under 21 champion, Jaimon Lidsey on 34, with 2024 Australian Champion, and current Oceania Champion, Rohan Tungate third on 29, followed by British League riders Ben Cook (25) and Zach Cook (22).
In both rounds Lidsey has gone through the heats unbeaten only for Holder to win both finals.
Next in the points are British League riders Jacob Hook, Keynan Rew, Mitchell McDiarmid and Justin Sedgmen. Rew finished fourth in last season’s championship but was beset by bike problems in the second round at the weekend which saw him slip down the rankings.
While the same four riders – Holder, Lidsey, Tungate and Ben Cook — have reached the final in both rounds, eleven different riders have reached the semi-finals, with the young teenage riders in the line-up not proving to be easy points for the more experienced international riders.
On Sunday night, Lidsey, Tungate and Ben Cook will return for the FIM Oceania Championship which will include riders from the UK, USA and New Zealand, including three of the four finalists in the recent SA Championship – winner Luke Becker, from California, runner-up Len Flint and fourth placegetter Scott Nicholls, both from England.
As well as individual glory the Australian riders in both meetings are competing for a place in the 2026 Speedway Grand Prix (SGP) qualifying events. Every year the FIM Track Racing Commission allocates spots to Motorcycling Australia (MA) for the SGP qualifying events and this year the allocation is three positions, possibly less than some people might have expected given Australia is one of the strongest nations at the moment.
As per MA’s National Individual and Team Selection Policy and, after consultation with the MA Track Commission, the positions will be allocated as follows: The first qualifying position will go to the winner of the Australian Championship; the second position goes to the highest placed Australian in the FIM Oceania Championship; and the third position goes to second place in the Australian Championship. One Australian will compete at each 2026 SGP qualifying round, with the goal a spot in the FIM SGP Challenge where the top four will then earn qualification for the 2027 SGP series.
Racing on both nights starts at 7.00pm. Gates will open at 3.00pm Friday and 4.00pm Sunday.
Admission prices are a reasonable $30 for adults, and $25 for age Pension and student concession card holders, with free admission for children under 16. The Adult entry is $20 cheaper than the walk-up entry ticket prices at the opening rounds interstate. For those that can’t attend, the meeting will be livestreamed through the website link https://www.spacequakesports.com. Viewers outside of Australia can also choose between Spacequakes and the British Speedway Network (https://watch.britishspeedway.co.uk/). Any other links are scams and should be ignored.

Directions:
The best way to get to Gillman Speedway is off Hanson Road.
If you are coming from the eastern and southern suburbs, get on to Hanson road off Torrens Road or Grand Junction Road, travel north on Hanson road over the train line then take the first road on the left, which is Wilkins road.
From the northern suburbs, travel down the Port Adelaide expressway and take the Hanson Road exit. Once on Hanson Road, take the first exit on your right, this is Wilkins road.
From the western suburbs, Wilkins Road is the continuation of Bedford Street, north of Eastern Parade.
For interstate visitors flying into Adelaide and getting a hire car, Gillman is about 20kms, and 30 minutes’ drive (depending on traffic lights) from the airport.
The easiest and most direct way from the airport, if not going to your accommodation first is:
On leaving the airport, turn left onto Sir Donald Bradman Drive. Continue along Sir Donald Bradman Drive until you reach the end of the airport grounds and turn right onto Tapleys Hill Road. Keep going on Tapleys Hill Road until you can’t go any further. That’s Port Road. Turn left onto Port Road (you can only turn left). Continue down Port Road for about 1 km to the first intersection which is Grand Junction road and turn right. Go 700 metres along Grand Junction Road, over a bridge over a railway line. Stay in the left lane because at the bottom of the bridge you turn left into Gray Terrace. Go to the end of Gray Terrace and turn right onto Bedford Street. Keep going on that road until you get to the speedway. About 2km.
Accommodation: There is plenty of accommodation in Adelaide and suburbs, within 20-30 minutes of the Speedway, ranging from five star hotels to caravan parks and backpacker hostels.
