2012 World Champion Chris Holder (pictured above) and Australia’s newest Grand Prix rider, Jason Doyle, head the list of riders selected by Motorcycling Australia to contest the Australian 500cc Solo Speedway Championship series which begins at Gillman Speedway in Adelaide on 2 January.
Eight riders have been seeded into the championship rounds and they are, in alphabetical order, Mason Campton (NSW), Jason Doyle (NSW), Max Fricke (Vic), Josh Grajczonek (Qld), Chris Holder (NSW-the defending champion), Sam Masters (NSW), Justin Sedgmen (Vic) and Rohan Tungate (NSW).
The remaining eight riders will be determined by a Qualifying meeting to be held at Gillman Speedway on 2 January (Friday). The line-up for the qualifying meeting is: Jake Allen (Qld), Alex Davies (NSW), Matthew Day (Qld), Jack Fallon (Vic), Jack Holder (NSW), Alan MacDonald (NSW), Joshua MacDonald (NSW), Tyson Nelson (Qld), Dakota North (Vic), Joey Ringwood (NSW), Kieran Sproule (NSW), Jordan Stewart (Vic), Cooper Riordan (Vic), Brodie Waters (Vic), Brady Webb (WA), Cameron Woodward (Vic) with Josh Coyne (Qld) as reserve.
Following the Qualifying meeting the championship will be held over four rounds, starting at Gillman in South Australia on 3 January, then moving on to Mildura (Vic, Monday, 5 January), Undera (Vic, Wednesday 7 January) and Kurri Kurri in New South Wales on 10 January.
It was initially reported that Motorcycling Australia had announced the highest placed non GP rider will be the Wild Card rider for the Melbourne Speedway Grand Prix at Etihad Stadium in October, and the next two highest placed riders will be the reserves, however the championship promoters quickly responded to say: “The highest placed non-FIM Speedway Grand Prix (SGP) rider will not automatically be the wild card for the 2015 Australian FIM Speedway Grand Prix at Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium on October 24. Wild cards for every SGP event are selected following consultation between the FIM, BSI Speedway, the staging promoter and the host federation and the wild card for the final round of the 2015 speedway world championship will not be chosen until closer to the event. All official announcements with regards to the FIM Speedway Grand Prix series will be issued via speedwaygp.com”.
