Mauger Dazzles Big Gillman Crowd
posted Sunday October 22, 2006.
Gillman Speedway got caught out by a bigger than expected crowd at our Classic Championship meeting last night.
Despite bitterly cold weather a bumper crowd turned up and we sold out of programmes before the meeting started (despite printing as many as we usually do) and then sold out of food as we had only catered for a much smaller crowd.
No doubt most were there to pay homage to Kym Bonython and to see Ivan Mauger on track once again, and they did not leave disappointed.
Mauger, who celebrated his 67th birthday a few weeks ago, had the crowd mesmerised and received a fantastic reception as he reeled off four laps in just 7 seconds outside Leigh Adams' track record!
Results of the Classic Championship Finals were: JAP / ESO Over 50s Solos: Jeff Fisher (SA), Graham Bysouth (Vic), Bill Sims (NSW), Brett Smiley (Vic)
2 Valve Solos: Arlo Bugeja (SA), Kevin Webb (WA), Rick Smith (SA), Roy Stout (Qld-ret)
Evolution Solos: Ashley Norton (SA), Kevin Webb (WA), Seane Chapman (SA), Roy Stout (Qld-dns)
British Sidecars: Dave Cottrell/Peter Vipond (Vic), Moz Pridham/Shane Rudloff (SA), Dave Langley/Bill Angwin (SA), Geoff Baran/Keith Simpson (SA-dns)
Japanese Sidecars: George Atherton/Matthew Fraser (SA), Mark Mitchell/Tom Golding (SA), Graham Thomson/Chris Thomson (SA), Richard Sampson/Bryon Burnett (SA)
